Did you know...

That you could get a sunburn from standing infront of a hot grill for 3 hours? Yeah, I found that out today. OO! And I got my picture taken like 50 times by one of the university's paper people. Maybe I'll be on the front page, he says. He introduced himself as a professional stalker, which I thought was cute.. and he came by like 3 times. Hmm...

and Darkness consumed Lubbock

.. I have no idea what just happened.

Kevin and I were suppose to go play golf if it was nice outside. He had an install to do and I had house cleaning and we were going to go in the afternoon. It's afternoon, 65 degrees, the sun was out... a second ago... and now, it's g o n e. According to the local news, we also have hail.

Everybody Dance Now

I like to think I don't have roomates because things like this happen. And I'd be the one in the video. Reminding me of a mission from late last year, I'm going back to my living room to perfect my Freedom Williams dance moves.

Violins & Hip Hop

Jay Leno had these two brothers Damien and Tourie Escobar as guests on his show tonight. The two hip hop violinists call themselves Nuttin But Stringz and they played their creation,"Thunder". They started out playing on the A Train and now play for schools and benefits. Their sound was one of the most refreshing I've heard in a long time! I recommend checking out their music if you get a chance. I read an article saying they're coming out with an album in the summer.

I also have this special appreciation for violinists. I took violin in the 3rd and 4th grade. I remember the bloody finger tips, early morning practices, and listening to myself make crying/dying cat sounds the first couple of weeks. Good times. Good times.

Hoops and Yoyo

SuperJoe sent me a Hallmark e-card with Hoops and Yoyo! Thank you Joe! I *heart* cartoons with pink cat characters!

Crazy Asian Candy

These are the kind I'm used to. This year mom found these awesome one that are litterally sliced pieces of ginger covered in crystallized sugar! They're not sweet sweet like the ones in the picture above... oh no... these are powerful.. we're talking wasabi like ginger goodness, wheeeew! Gotta love that Chinese New Year candy stuffs! I also got the dried banana, sugar covered young coconut slices and tamarind... mmmmm soo unhealthy, but soo tasty!

I flew home on Friday to attend the Texas Section meeting of SAE and give a short presentation on our 1st year car. Dad was kind enough to leave my sweet trusty Accord at the airport for me the night before so I could drive it around.

Man, I miss the feel of a manual transmission. It feels oh, soooo good! The drive from the airport was great. I miss the sound of my car after I added the aftermarket air intake. I miss shifting gears, double clutching, and watching the tach rise to numbers that would make my dad's eyes bug. I don't know if I miss the feel of the suspension that needed to be replaced, but I missed how it felt hugging the curves on the overpasses. Hugging? Maybe clinging for dear life. I had that Accord for a long time. I named her Baby. Yes, she's a girl. A very girly girl and I loved her. She took me places, Florida, New Orleans, all over Texas. I've slept in her, taken trips to IKEA just to buy speaker stands. We've picked up hot dates, gone to expensive dinners, everything. I still carry her key on my keychain. Three years with my dad and she aged. Her carpet is all worn, her interior is faded. Her sunroof leaks. *Sigh*. Good times.

First thing after graduation (after securing the jobby job and the homestead for me and Vivi) is obtaining a car, something asian, something manual, something easy to work on. Maybe I'll ask for Baby back and fix her up. Maybe I'll do the grown up thing and let her go and adopt a sweet little convertible. Hmm. How 'bout I finish this semster first.

Nerdness

I am nerdier than 91% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

SamBaMike did it. So I had to too.

Cows!

If you know me, you know I love cows, and cow related cuteness. I'm going to be gone this weekend, so I leave you all with a little bit of cow cuteness as posted by Disneymike. Check out his post on a wonderful company called Innocent Drinks

Enjoy!

People and Faith

Summer before last, one of my classmates called me and asked me what I thought about starting a team at school to build and compete in a collegiate race car competition. It sounded like a good idea, so I asked why I was getting the phone call. Turned out, they needed someone to 'start' the team. They had the man power, they needed an administrative leader. So sure. I took on the task. Why not? I like cars, I like boys. I like boys that like cars. And usually when you have amicable factors then good things happen.

Since that phone call, I've done my best to do all the registration and funding paperwork, meet with all the people that needed to be met. All that was left was for the team to get together, design and build the car. Two years later, after much poking and proding and pleading we have a frame, and an engine block.

Why so little? Well lets see, I've been told: "oh we have time", "Hieu you worry too much", " take a chill pill", "it'll get done." These are the same guys that have either slowly disappeared from the "team" or have opted to work on "other" projects or varying other excuses. When the time comes to gleam spotlight action, there are those that love to pop up with, "well i did this and this and that and this and we wouldn't have this if it weren't for me". Really, I ask where the hell were you two years ago? But, I tell you, when we won't have a tuned and fully functional car, or at worst a car at all it will come down to me. I know this because it always does.

Take today for instance. We had a meeting with our student goverment people. I had a prior engagement with another organization - such is the way it goes. I called to remind Mr. I'm the Leader Guy that there's a 2:45 meeting at 2:20. On my walk back to the building, I see Mr. Leader Guy walking out... it's 2:45. A little late huh? Well who's going to take care of it? Oh lemme guess me? Yeah. No.

I've given up counting on people. I try to not be this way, but honestly counting on people gets me know where but even further behind had I just done it myself. Maybe it's the SouthPlains mentality of the people that reside or attend school in my geographical location. Either way, I hope that the "real world", which consists of land masses outside the 200 mile radius that is this misplaced hell hole, is a lot more promising.

Hallmark Holiday Goodness

Earlier today (which is now yesterday) I found a g33k-intensive Valentine's Card to send out to my 'Geek Consious' friends . If you didn't get one, don't feel bad, I probably didn't figure you the 'geek-type'. And if you got one, it's not that you're necessarily a geek, it was more of I-know-you'd-laugh-with-me kind of thing.

I spent the evening filling out bill payment stubs, re-building an agenda for the ME Conference, talked to my sister about facebook-scandals and met with my design group for our presentation tomorrow. Vivi got turkey pastrami with his Purina and a nice warm bath with Camomile scented shampoo.

And I'm up late because I just got off the phone with my Facebook-Hubby. ;-D

Just wondering...

As I'm finishing up homework, glancing up at the Grammy's every now and then, is anyone else finding it odd that all the people accepting awards on behalf of Ray Charles are all anglo, and that all of them are thanking their families first? I believe these awards are to celebrate the accomplishments of the artists, their song and or album. The artist, people. The artist.

Aero*die*namics

So this test today. That I stayed up till 3am studying for. Was multiple choice. Where none of my answers matched the answers given. Even if I worked backwards, nothing matched. And so. After all of that. The exam won't be counted. Instructor Error. *sigh*

the Master plan...

Back in the day, I met this really cool guy named Nick. And one day we went shopping for his really cool car. This really cool car has since passed on and we're still really good cool car buddies... here's a recent online chat

Nick wants his car back
Me: I want an STi.
Nick: The STi is undeniably cool. And undeniably out of my price range for the near future.
Me: Being that I have no man on which to spend my money, my money will go to an STi.
Nick: And once you have an STi you can catch any man you want.
Me: Yes, yes this is the plan.

Sanity

When I was last in Houston over winter break, Judy asked me if I wanted to take the MugOfSanity(TM) with me. Foolishly, I turned it down. Now would be an ideal time for some Tension Tamer Tea in theMug.

So my school is hosting this big gala for engineers in about 6 weeks. Six weeks. In 6 weeks people from 4 states and Mexico will decend on my little dust bowl for competitions and we have no judges. What gets me is that I, exercising delegation skills, assigned Judge Finding to one of my students back in September of last year. Here it is, 6 weeks till, and we have no judges. He just now emails me asking where to look for them. And the left side of my head is scalpless. But that's not all. Behind door two, our VP has learned that the catering (which is holding up the budget, which is holding up the contract, which is holding up securing room rates) is apparently not important to the people who are doing our catering, who happen to be the same people we're renting space from, and who we have to get the contract to. The amount of suck = high.

On a brighter note. I had the lounge in our building measured for lockers! We'll finally have lockers so we won't have to tote what one of my classmates calls '50lb dead midgets' on our back.

81 days until this semester is over.

Happy Lunar New Year

The Year of the Rooster starts today! According to 'ancient chinese secrets', tigers like myself "will make many forward steps for success. (Hmm, I'll graduate this year!) Almost everything tigers do will turn out well, although it may also breed envy among peers and friends." *grin* We'll see.

I miss being home. Mom and Dad would give me little red envelopes with money inside. I still have the one Dad sent me the first New Year's I spent in Buttocks. :-)

Happy Lunar New Years, everybody! I'm gonna start this one off right and get me a good 8 hours of sleep before class tomorrow!

Pictures!!

Holiday pictures are Posted!! (Finally! I know.)

Kid Geniuses

This morning I had to get to campus at 7:45 to help grade for the local area MathCounts competition. The 6 and 7th graders first take a timed written test and "sprint" round. At the end, they face off one another and do a bracket elimination. The kid that won is a walking calculator!! Before the proctor could finish reading the problem, his hand was ready to hit the bell to ring in his answer!! And we're talking problems like: Say you have a jar with oodles of nickels and dimes and quarters, and some odd number of each of them. What's the value of 1/3 of the nickles + 1/5 of the quarters. WTH? Yeah.

I remember doing the math competitions when I was young. I was smart like that too. Then college made me calculator dependent.

Chivalry hasn't died :-)

Riding the bus has it's perks: a) Not having to play Frogger @ 8:30am and b) That extra 20 minutes of sleep since I don't have to defrost the car and park in the mud. That extra 20 minutes costs me though. There's usually not an empty seat left. Except today. Today :o) a VerySweetGuy(TM) gave me his seat! It made my (very short) day

I'm easily amused. Let me be.
