Happy Halloween

I'm typing away at a long over due letter and the phone starts chiming Ode to Joy.. it's Dad.

"Hi Dad!"
"Hi Hieu, it's raining really hard outside and I'm driving home."

Why my dad calls to tell me he's driving home in pouring down rain, I dunno. But he does this a lot, I think - really - it's just for the added drama. He wants to know how school's going, and how's my health - while he's driving in the rain. Makes me wonder if he's trying out for Fear Factor - Obsessive Parent's Edition. If he really wanted to know, he'd ask... sitting down in the confines of home. So I answer and change the subject.

"Happy Birthday, Dad!"
"Huh, what? Really? Oh yeaaaah!"

My dad's funny that way. He remembers our birthday and not his own. He remembers to call and tell us embarassing stories about ourselves like when I was 5 and I was constipated and a chopstick was involved. Yeah. Like that.

Party, TexasStyle

From the pages of CNN

Only in Texas will a Judge get away with balloons, streamers, and a cake celebrating the life sentencing of a former fugitive.
"You just made my day when I heard you had finally come home," Criminal Courts Judge Faith Johnson told Billy Wayne Williams, who had been convicted in absentia of aggravated assault after he disappeared a year ago. "We're so excited to see you, we're throwing a party for you." - cnn article

It's kinda funny, but not, but yeah, it really is.

It's gonna be a long week...

"Dance like nobody's watching;
Love like you've never been hurt.
Sing like nobody's listening;
Live like it's heaven on earth."
- Mark Twain

Have a good one everybody!

Did you know??

Buying windshield wiper fluid requires one to flash an ID @ Walmart!

Tech vs. UT

At Tech we have traditions. And winners who help keep the spirit alive. Winners that pick up charcoal lighter fluid and threaten to throw it into the crowd. Ones that find it fun to throw pizza and bbq sauce and cups of dipspit. A couple of winners did some damage to the Longhorn equiptment truck with body paint and pocket knives. Accoring to the site where I got these pictures, they also started a leak in the diesel tank - how clever. Not everyone is this bad, there was the one RighteousNutSack who told everyone to cut it out. I just smiled and was thankful no one fell on my head again.

UT stomped us 51-21.

*growl*

There's nothing like a long ass walk to ones car - past sundown - when mosquitos the size of baby mice land on your neck and arms bite and leave horrid welts of itchiness. To make it even more special, my poor car was surrounded by ya-loos and their Winnebagos and yellow twine. They don't bother to think, hey maybe kids need to go to class t'marra - maybe we shouldn't park here. But no. It's the American way - slightly thoughtless and well, just plain annoying. Nothing says they can't park in that lot, so by golly they will.

Speaking of the American way.... so in one of the blogs I regularly read, a young American responds to a well written light hearted political article with this:

Well it's all good and well to hang on to our childish ideas of patriotism but when it comes right down to logic, what good does it do to vote for the libertarian candidate? i too find myself swinging into the libertarian pool. But more then that I find that I don't want to throw away my vote to a third candidate when the race is really only between the first and the second. More votes on the libertarian ticket won't awaken the party to a new national status of respect.

Well I think it's pretty childish to whittle this country's political process down to simple "a therefore b" type logic. I wonder if this young lady realizes how lucky she is to be given the opportunity of a choice in her country's leader - a real choice. But no. It's all part of that American mentality - aversion to common sense. I don't think she understands that it's her action of choosing a popular candidate over the one she'd rather vote for is contributing to her libertarian ticket not reaching that "status of respect". She's not giving it any respect. See to her, there's no real value in having her own choice. She'd rather buy Prada cause everyone else does - individuality means nothing. The freedom of choice. That freedom. Nothing. These kids who are born here and whose only suffering is some silly gradeschool heartbreak are spoiled and don't realize that what they have. And it angers me that they belittle something so precious as a vote.

Warmest of Fuzzies

On the way home today, I had one of those deep thought moments thinking about my friends and how much I love them.

Real friends, like the ones that sit up with you until dawn the next day while you’re crying about that guy who spent your money but for some reason you love him anyway. The friends that spot you $20 just to spot you a $20. Or how about the ones that take you out to buy you a Marilyn Monroe dress and then take you out on a blind date at the Cheesecake Factory to remind you how pretty you are. Friends that will treat your new friends like family and feed them well. Friends that will let you poke at their belly and giggle. And friends that will share with you the secret of TheCrackLemonade™. They never forget your birthday even if you haven’t seen them in 4 years. They don’t give you JewishGrandmotherGuiltTrips™ when you don’t call for a month. They listen when you talk, and when you see them again after a long time – it’s like you were never gone.

Everyone should have friends like these :-D

4:20 am and what are you doin...

So, I was about to crash when i get a message.. and it went like this:

BM(4:12:34 AM): so you will never guess what just happened as i was trying to go to bed
Tygriss (4:12:44 AM): you got bit?
BM(4:12:56 AM): lol, not exactly :-)
BM(4:12:56 AM): so i just closed my laptop and this guy starts banging on my window
BM(4:13:50 AM): so i opened the blinds to see a guy looking all freaked out and yelling that someone is trying to kill him and to let him in
BM(4:14:34 AM): so i grab my gun and let him in. i then talk to the 911 operator on his phone and i have 2 cops on my front deck now talking with him
BM (4:15:14 AM): and when i let him in he just goes right to the floor and yells at me to get down
BM (4:15:59 AM): then he hides behind my couch, and then eventually on my stairs
Tygriss(4:16:19 AM): was anybody really after him
Tygriss(4:16:27 AM): or was it a crackedout fiend?
BM (4:16:35 AM): i didnt see anyone when i looked out side
BM (4:17:04 AM): he seemed like he was on crack, but he told the cops he hadnt taken anything
BM(4:17:28 AM): last time i checked he was with the cops right in front of my place

And this is why we don't answer our windows at 4 am...

NAESC @ A&M

This'll get it's own post.. but until then, enjoy the Tequila Sneeze story and pictures. It was a good weekend w/ theDanza, K-State kids, and SakiBombs.

UPDATE:
So this is like a week late.. But I'll post here anyway. NAESC was at A&M this year. Which wasn't so bad after all except that I flew in. And when I say flew, I mean was tossed around in a metal hackey sack with propellers. I made fun of the Lubbock Int'l Airport, but wow, the CollegeStation Airport is pretty small. And when I say small, I mean like a children's library "small". At most it would hold two of these crop dusters.

The conference was excellent, I got to meet with other councils - big, small, new, etc... I learned a lot about what they do events wise. It was refreshing to know that other campuses have student bodies that aren't as apathetic as Tech's.

I had awesome roomates this year, Amy and Kim from K-State. I also had some great food thanks to Aaron who suggested McAllisters and Aaron who hooked me up with some excellent sushi. BTW, sushi @ Kyoto in College Station is the best sushi with even better prices than anywhere I've been!

Sometime else during the weekend, I picked up this horrible cold from Amy, got elected to a regional office, met some fun people, carried two 30pks of Keystone, got a bruise on my leg from the bed of a truck, and made fun of UT girls in tasteless Gucci cheekshield sunglasses. On a small sour note, I lost all shreds of respect for the travel buddy who in the midst of wisdom alluded me as to reason for theWierdness I've mentioned to most of you before... apparently I'm old. (LOL!)

I came back with a snazzy new t-shirt that's not absolutely huge, lots of career fair toys, and a great picture of me in a cowboy hat. Ohh yeah. Good stuff! So that was that folks!

The Galveston Post

This weekend (Thursday - Sunday) started my 2nd term with the IPTI. Last year I was on the Collegiate Council, this year I served as their Intern. Just like last year we got to stay at Galveston's numero uno resort, the San Luis.

This year the Collegiate Council was tasked with completing the website that was started by last year's council and to put together a nice power point we can all use to help promote membership in the organization. The Council spent the weekend learning about the Petroleum Industry and the ASME Petroleum Divison, now known as IPTI. The Friday meetings were more to familiarize the new Council with the organization and each other. The Saturday meetings were with guest speakers from industry who brought us all up to date on the current status of the Petroleum Industry and what lay ahead for us should we choose to work in the field. (Shameless plug here: Two of the speakers, one council member, and the intern - me, we're all from Tech. Tech rocks.) We got a lot accomplished while we were there and the projects will be done soon - we're keeping track of everything using asme's cop site.

Now for the fun stuff...

A few of us flew into InterContinental around 730 at night on Thursday. When our group all showed up, I got to drive us all in the snazztastic BabyBlueGrandCaravan through an ocean's worth of non-stop rain to Galveston. We had a little bit of culture shock all the way around. The Colorado boys, Matt and Ryan, were instantly amazed that people have the A/C on in the car at night in Texas. And, I was amazed with the column shifter and to learn that the little pedal on the left was a parking brake (crazy american cars)!!

The rain was horrible, but it made Valet parking all the more worth the $9/night. The rooms were absolutely spifftacular, with our own balconies, bathrobes, a gizzillion pillows per bed... and my roomate this year, Kara.. man she's awesome. Our room had a door that went to Chris's (from Arlington) room next door - that's one big party room. Dinner Thursday night was excellent - the $15 vouchers barely covered the entrees, but $6 for salmon and crab - toootally worth it!

Speakin of food.. I've never had soo much to eat.. well since my last trip to Galveston..... Dinner at Landry's consisted of a double decked appetizer, the crab feast (with a crab cooked a dozen different ways) - there's a picture of it in the photo album, and creme brullee...Breakfast was custom made omlettes... the lunches awesome too for hotel food. Now i'm back to ramen and salad in a bag. *sigh*

On our offtime we: went down the street to Kroger for the good stuff (Bass was on sale), drank at the swim up bar, hung out in a purple grotto, swam in the pool until the wee hours of the morning, drank some really good beer, sang karaoke (there are videos!), had my first apple martini, walked along the beach, watch the glass on the hotel doors fog up from the frigid air of the lobby and the humidity, and other things that don't need to be mentioned (like Elvis rolling over in his Grave, Whitney's ears burning, and.. oh yeah, i wasn't going to mention those.)

Things i learned: Hotel lobby's coldness wins over the heated pool/hottub - one will catch a cold. If one is going to plan a wedding at such a swank spot, rent out the whole damn place - there's nothing worse than having drunk college kids belt out tunes with a karaoke machine during your reception. All this talk about stepping up notches...we still took beer home :-)

On a very special note, my little brother came down to see me and I got to hang out at his pad for a bit and play with the Bowski. Very cool to have a brother who knows how to decorate and where to find cheap beer.

J&A came down to G-Town to hang out too!! They be lookin all fine and swank with their bad selves!! Reminding me of theDays and my honorary memebership in the IBLL. Good stuff.

Coming in November a couple of these guys - Ryan and Jeremy - will be joining me - and Danielle, Julie, Brian and the others SSC's - in Anaheim for Congress!! I can't wait! Imagine.. SAM ppl + RSLS ppl + IPTI CC ppl + Congress = MassiveBaddAssness!!

To Kara, Evelyn, Jillian, Alicia, Chris, Rohit, Matt, Ryan, Keith, Ryan, Jeremy, & Gustavo, it was great meeting you guys! You all made it one of the best weekends EVER!! I'll see you all again soon!!

Fun Stuff

How about this for a Halloween costume?!! I'm thinking about going as O-Ren or GoGo, actually. Cause I can.

Sit down, we need to talk...

** I wrote this for a someone, not everyone, but i posted it anyway. Letting it out some how makes it all better**

Sometimes things just don't work out the way we think they should. Simple. One day we've found a new best friend, weeks later it turns out it was purely out of convenience.

I admit that I have a huge flaw that perpetuates the above. Inside of the harsh exterior I'm often accused of, I have a heart that I inherited from my mother as she did from hers. One that loves unconditionally. One that will, under any cirumstance will stand behind, push forward, and lift up above whenever needed. It is also one that is easily stepped on, tossed aside and ignored whevenever it's usefullness has ceased.

Disrespect and un-appreciation are no strangers to me. I have learned to recognize them from a distance and to avoid them. As a human being, I should not have to spend idle hours entertaining their negativity. I value myself much more than that.

In my attempts to avoid said negativity, we have discussed this thrice. The third, in its charm, revealed the truth and I have have no more forgiveness to offer. And so it is with little regret that I resign my post as a friend. I can no longer wholeheartedly fulfill my duties as a friend of yours. I wish you well.

Man Pillow

All I've really wanted all along is just someone to cuddle with at night. No tossing, no turning, no snoring, no stealing of blankies, no accidental kicks or slaps in the face. The Japanese have come up with an awesome solution: The Man Pillow. Good stuff I tell you.
